Zambian Adoption

Zambian Ambassador to US

This program is temporarily suspended.
The Children
The children are cared for mostly in private orphanages. The little country of Zambia, nestled in the heart of Africa has one of the highest number of orphaned children of any country in the world. It is estimated that 27% of all children in Zambia have lost their mother, father or both parents. It is estimated by some that in the urban areas three-quarters of families are already caring for at least one orphaned child. The number of orphaned children who live on the streets in Zambia has increased 250% in the past ten years.
Most orphanages will test the children for HIV and AIDS at the time of admittance. There will be a required medical exam once the Zambian adoption is complete and the child gets his or her immigrant visa medical exam. Adoptive parents may choose to get a blood test done after they have been given guardianship and before the adoption is complete. This can be performed by a US Embassy appointed physician.
Parent Requirements
Applications from traditional, married couples will be accepted as well as single women. At least one parent needs to be age 25. There is no upper age restriction. There are no income requirements. There are no religious requirements. There is no restriction on the size of an adopting family.
Travel to Zambia
The cost of travel will depend on which travel option you choose. You will be amazed at the mall shopping options in Lusaka! You can purchase clothing, shoes, and personal care products at PEP Stores, and nearly anything else at a South African chain store called The Game Store. You may want to consider taking formula and diapers in your luggage as these items are expensive to purchase in Zambia.
